MR MANUFACTURER Compotite Corporation has been supplying shower pans to the plumbing and tile industries since 1938.
COMPOSEAL Blue Vinyl Shower Pan, job proven in hundreds of thousands of installations nationwide since 1979 with no reported material, failures, provides the basis for COMPOSEAL GOLD.
The latest American Heat-fusion technology is used to apply a bondable surface to the COMPOSEAL membrane that will not delaminate.
COMPOSEAL products are manufactured in the USA.
PP PRODUCT PRESENTATION COMPOSEAL GOLD is a 3-ply, 40 mil gauge crack isolation waterproofing sheet membrane for use in bonded direct thin-set tile and marble installations. (See detail, this page)
COMPOSEAL GOLD is manufactured in 60" widths packaged in 90 ft. and 50 ft. rolls.
Crack Suppression Capability
Independent laboratory tests, supervised by the Ceramic Tile Institute of Los Angeles, conducted on COMPOSEAL GOLD over a split substrate using the load-bearing Robinson Floor Tester, confirm that COMPOSEAL GOLD has superior strength and ability to protect a properly installed thin-set tile installation from the most common cracks found in residential and commercial construction.Bonding Direct Capability
COMPOSEAL GOLDs two outer layers of non-woven polyester heat-fused at 290° F to the inner PVC membrane allows direct-bonding of COMPOSEAL GOLD to both the substrate below and the tile above. The heat-fusion manufacturing process prevents delamination of the polyester backing from the core.Waterproofing Capability
The well-proven COMPOSEAL PVC Shower Pan Liner makes up the inner layer of COMPOSEAL GOLD and gives the same waterproofing protection.
UA USES, APPLICATIONS COMPOSEAL GOLD is used as a concealed crack isolation (anti-fracture) and/or waterproof membrane under thin-set installations of ceramic and marble tile, terrazzo and brick; for new construction, remodeling or repair, residential and commercial, in kitchens, restaurants, resident entries, steam rooms, radiant heated flooring, shopping malls, etc.
Negligible shrinkage at extreme temperatures, -20° F to 212° F, combined with a low water vapor permeability makes COMPOSEAL GOLD especially ideal for Steam Rooms, steam cleaned floors, and Radiant Heated Flooring.
COMPOSEAL GOLD is easily welded on the jobsite to COMPOSEAL Shower Pan Liner in transitional areas from a thick mortar setting bed
to thin-set installations where waterproofing is required, such as in Handicapped Showers. (See details, figure 5.) COMPOSEAL GOLD may be used in thin-set Gang Showers, provided membrane is sloped to drain weep holes, and thin-set Exterior Decks where substrate material is properly protected by sloped mortar fill and drainage has been specifically designed for a thin-set installation. (See details, figure 4 and TCA method F122.) We strongly recommend a thick-set reinforced mortar bed for all showers and roof decks, (Methods F103 or F121.)
Limitations
The use of COMPOSEAL GOLD as a crack isolation membrane is limited only by the size and type of crack to be bridged. The most common cracks are from concrete slab shrinkage, which COMPOSEAL GOLD is specifically engineered to isolate. Compotite Technical Report #92-1 details other types of cracks and suggested remedies.COMPOSEAL GOLD is not intended to bridge expansion joints, but can provide continuous waterproofing through expansion joints. (See details, figure 2.)
COMPOSEAL GOLD cannot be used as a liner for pools containing fish or water plants.
COMPOSEAL GOLD cannot be bonded direct to any material adversely affected by water; plywood substrates ( or pressure treated or creosoted lumber) must be covered with CBU;s (Cementitious Backer Units) or 1" min. mortar fill before installing COMPOSEAL GOLD.
COMPOSEAL GOLD cannot be used with asphalt or bituminous based products.
OP OVERALL PRODUCT, IN PLACE The powerful protection of COMPOSEAL GOLD against cracks and water damage generally adds less than 1/8" to 1/4" to the overall thickness of the thin-set installation.

CS COATINGS, SURFACES Substrate Bond Coat
Install COMPOSEAL GOLD sheets using either:
1. Any latex portland cement mortar complying with ANSI A118.4 whether containing a dry latex, or liquid latex added at the job according to manufacturers directions. A min 3/16" V-notch trowel is recommended so as to spread the bond coat to provide complete coverage and contact.
or2. Rapid setting mortar: Use of a rapid setting latex mortar to bond COMPOSEAL GOLD to substrate allows same day setting of tile above the membrane. Use any rapid setting latex mortar complying with ANSI A118.4 and follow manufacturers instructions carefully.

Figure 5. Transition from mortar bed to thin-set and transition for disabled accessTile Setting Bed
Tile is bonded direct to COMPOSEAL GOLD using the thin-set method (ANSI A108.5) in accordance with TCA Handbook recommendations, and using ANSI A118.4 latex portland cement mortar. A thick-setting mud bed ( ANSI A108.1) may also be used.
MF MATERIALS, FINISHES Seam Welding: COMPOSEAL GOLD is welded with COMPOSEAL Flexible PVC solvent cement applied generously through scrim, and, after 2 minute open time, gives instant contact strength.
Corners: Pre-formed COMPOSEAL GOLD inside and outside corners are available for waterproofing jobs.
Flashings: COMPOSEAL GOLD is bonded to metal flashings, drains, protrusions, etc. with COMPOTITE ELASTISEAL.
CC CODE ACCEPTABILITY, CERTIFICATION COMPOSEAL GOLD meets the ANSI A118.10 standard for Load Bearing Bonded Waterproof Membranes for Thin-Set Ceramic Tile and Dimension Stone Installations, and all ASTM D4551 Test requirements for 40 mil flexible PVC waterproof membrane.
COMPOSEAL GOLD is also listed on the Ceramic Tile Institute "Tested Material List" and recognized by the Tile Institute of America.
